Meet the Blacksmith

Clayton Baker is a blacksmith and metalworker from Saint Joe, Indiana, where he lives with his wife and three children. His passion lies in the continual pursuit of craftsmanship.

While his career includes CNC plasma cutting and steel fabrication, he has maintained an active blacksmithing practice since 2016, combining traditional forging, casting, and modern fabrication techniques in his own shop.

He has designed and built much of his own equipment, including a custom forge with a self-cast firepot and engineered exhaust system, believing that the craft shapes the craftsman as much as the craftsman shapes the work, and that understanding the tools is as important as mastering their use. Clayton’s work ranges from decorative forged pieces and sculptural ironwork to architectural ironwork and restoration projects.

For him, the greatest satisfaction comes not from the finished object alone, but from the challenge of transforming raw materials into something functional, beautiful, and enduring while continually expanding his own skills and the capabilities of his shop.

He enjoys sharing that mindset with students, helping them build confidence at the anvil while learning not only the techniques of forging, but also the habits of curiosity, problem-solving, and continual improvement that have shaped his own journey as a craftsman.
